STIMULATING OUR YOUTH’S INTEREST IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATH

Scholarship Program

The Baton Rouge section continues to be involved in outreach activities during 2009-2010.

*      Encounter Engineering (E2) Career Roundtable; August 20; Faculty Club, LSU

This STEP (Stem Talent Expansion Program) camp offered through the LSU College of Engineering provides incoming students a head start in Math, Physics and Engineering Design. SWE was invited to speak to camp participants at a Career Roundtable mainly to introduce Project Management as a career path.

*      Shaw Group Girl Day; February 23; Lod Cook Conference Center, LSU

This marks SWE’s third year of collaborations with Shaw Group to bring in high school girls from around the Baton Rouge Metro area and as far as Lafayette to introduce them to the various engineering disciplines to consider for college. SWE’s role is to raise more awareness of its mission and objectives as a non-profit educational and service organization that would empower them to succeed and advance in the fields of engineering, and to be recognized for their life-changing contributions as engineers and leaders.

*      Baton Rouge Community College STEM Career Expo, March 3, BRCC Campus.

SWE was invited to participate in an engineering panel towards career and workforce development. This panel focused on promoting civil and chemical engineering to stimulate interest in BRCC’s new pre-engineering program to be offered in the Fall of 2010.
