Although its founders hadn’t envisioned the Society as a global organization, SWE has counted international members among its ranks since its early years and has expanded its programming in the past two decades to create a global exchange for change.

SWE had a member in Montreal, Canada, before it had a section west of the Mississippi River, and in its early years welcomed several international members while they completed their degrees in the United States.

Europe
The December 1954 issue of the SWE Newsletter introduced its three European members: Anna Enrichetta Amour from Torino, Italy; Anneli Ahola from Helsinki, Finland; and Monique de Resseguier from Paris.
AIDIA
After completing her education in the United States, Anna Amour co-founded the Associazione Italiana Donne Ingegneri e Architetti (Italian Association of Women Engineers and Architects).

SWE welcomed 529 women engineers and scientists and approximately 125 guests from 35 countries to the First International Conference of Women Engineers and Scientists in New York City in June 1964.

ICWES Banquet
Having only planned for 300 attendees, ICWES organizers had locate a new dining facility a few weeks prior to the conferences as registrations poured in. SWE also hosted ICWES VII in 1984 and ICWES 16 in 2014.
ICWES Technical Program
The program for the first ICWES, titled, “Focus for the Future: Developing Engineering and Scientific Talent,” included technical sessions, roundtable discussions, tours, and a trip to the New York World’s Fair.

SWE began laying the groundwork for renewed global engagement in the mid-2000s, and hosted symposiums and workshops in Europe and India in the early 2010s.

Bangalore

WE JWIN
FY15 SWE President Elizabeth Bierman presented with a representative from the Japan Women’s Innovative Network (J-WIN) at the WE14 annual conference in Los Angeles. SWE’s partnership with J-WIN began in 2009 and expanded with the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) in 2011.

To better reach the Society’s global members, SWE launched a conference in Europe in 2015 and in India the following year, which have become annual WE Local events.

WE Europe Amsterdam

WE Local Bengaluru

The Society debuted its global affiliate and ambassador programs in 2013, helping members outside the United States to form local, SWE-affiliated networks.

Brasil
The sixth SWE Brazil conference, hosted at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre in August 2023, drew more than 500 attendees from six educational institutions and 60 companies.
Lagos Outreach
Girls learned about automotive systems at Milex Complete Auto Care during a 2019 SWENext event hosted by SWE’s Lagos and River State Global Affiliates in Nigeria.
SWE Wuxi
A 2021 networking event hosted by the SWE Wuxi Global Affiliate in China included an outdoor hike and planning for future events.
