Over the past decade, Valerie Thomas (pronouns: she, her, hers) has proudly served as a leader in both the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). In NSBE, she currently holds the position of National Professionals Technical Excellence Chairperson, overseeing NSBE’s Special Interest Groups (SIGs). In SWE, her previous roles included co-chair and chair of the membership committee, advisor to the University of Georgia chapter, and liaison for the NSBE-SWE joint membership initiative. Additionally, she is a dedicated member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated.
Valerie holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Southern Polytechnic State University. Professionally, she works as a Marketing Communications Professional at Siemens and currently resides in Alpharetta, Georgia.
Valerie is passionate about women’s equality and is determined to ensure that women in STEM have a platform to be heard. As the Deputy Speaker of the Senate, she will continue to make a meaningful difference by working with the ASPS to continuously improve SWE’s present and prepare for the future. As a woman of color, she is committed to increasing diversity in SWE leadership and encouraging engagement in leadership roles across all membership levels.
As SWE continues to evolve, it is imperative that its goals, vision, and objectives align with the changing world around us.
