Valerie Bland, Director of Content and Programs, began her career in education as a fourth-grade teacher. To her surprise, she discovered she enjoyed curriculum development and instructional design much more than actual teaching. As a result, Valerie transferred her career to adult learners in a corporate learning and development environment where she created and enhanced existing programs and initiatives for a mid-size company. Valerie enjoyed the challenge of working in a new environment on topics unfamiliar to her while enhancing her pedagogy for adult learners. In 2012, Valerie moved to Chicago, where she continued to work with adult learners, but now, they were distant learners within associations and societies. Valerie spent three years as the Manager of Education with the American Hospital Association (AHA), where she strengthened her performance excellence, change management, and strategic planning pedagogy.
Valerie began working for SWE in January 2015 responsible for a variety of professional programming including the WE abstract submission and selection process, the Advance Learning Center, SWE’s diversity and inclusion products, the Leadership Competency Model, eXXec (SWE’s executive education program), and the Academic Leadership for Women in Engineering (ALWE) program. Valerie also enjoys sharing her passion for instructional design and curriculum development while working with the curriculum committee, the leadership coaching committee (LCC) and with conference advisory board (CAB).
