SUMMARY:From Idea to Impact: Pitching Workshop from an Incubator's Perspective
DESCRIPTION:From Idea to Impact: Pitching Workshop from an Incubator’s Perspective\nA strong pitch starts long before you step onto a stage. It begins with a clear idea\, a solid foundation\, and an understanding of what investors and partners truly look for. \nThis workshop\, presented by SWE in partnership with the TMU Incubators and WiRE\, offers a deep dive into the early stages of venture creation and the art of pitching from the perspective of those who guide startups every day. \nWe are thrilled to welcome Dr. Philip R. Walsh\, Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship & Strategy at the Ted Rogers School of Management. With extensive consulting experience across the North American and European energy sectors and as a registered professional geoscientist Dr. Walsh brings a unique industry and academic lens to startup development. \nIn this session\, you will: \nDiscover the incubation programs\, resources\, and support systems available to help turn ideas into ventures.Gain insight into real startup success stories that began within incubation environments.Understand the key steps in the incubation journey from early concept validation to preparing for external opportunities.Learn how to craft an effective pitch from experts who have heard and evaluated hundreds of them.Explore what makes a pitch compelling\, memorable\, and investment-ready.Join us to build your foundational skills\, connect with SWE\, WiRE\, and TMU’s incubator network\, and learn how great ideas grow into impactful solutions. \nDr. Philip R. Walsh: He is an Associate Professor\, Entrepreneurship & Strategy at the Ted Rogers School of Management. He was formerly a Lecturer in Corporate Strategy and MBA Programme Director at the University of Surrey\, U.K. Prior to joining academia in 2003\, he was the Managing Director of a consultancy that provided strategic planning and policy services to major energy utilities\, a number of governmental and municipal agencies\, and various Canadian and British energy consuming organizations. Dr. Walsh is the Faculty Advisor for TMU’s Energy and Natural Resources Association\, a Fellow of the TMU Entrepreneurship Research Institute and a member of the TMU Institute for the Study of Corporate Social Responsibility. DESCRIPTION:The SWE Early Career Professional Affinity Group cordially invites you to our virtual event\, “FY26 Monthly Professional Development Series: November” on Wednesday\, November 19\, 2025 at 8:00 p.m. ET / 5:00 p.m. PT. This month’s session features two insightful presentations focused on leadership\, career pivots and emotional intelligence. \nLeah Baker will speak on “Pressure\, Pivots\, and Possibility: Building Confidence Through Career Shifts”. She will also share her experience transitioning back into an engineering career path and the role SWE played in this decision and transition. Finally\, she will also share insights on stepping up when her manager was let go. In her talk you will learn more about Leading without a title: Owning your impact early on; Joining and staying active in professional societies like SWE: Why it is worth it; and Getting the most out of conferences and industry events. \nEmily Carney will speak on “Lessons in Emotional Intelligence from my bookshelf”. SUMMARY:ECP AG: WE25 Recap Part 2
DESCRIPTION:The SWE Early Career Professionals Affinity Group cordially invites you to our upcoming virtual event\, “WE25 Recap Part 2” on Tuesday\, November 18\, at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT! Did you miss WE25? Join us for this session as we recap on ‘Increasing Success with Intergenerational Teams’ with Kathryn Wittek & Emma Koslow and ‘The Art of Design Review’ with Rebecca Lin. Kathryn and Emma will talk about how the workplace is more diverse than ever before\, including now FIVE different generations working side-by-side. This age diversity brings a variety of different mindsets\, skill sets\, and communication styles. What kinds of challenges does this present? How do these differences affect our ability to work as a team effectively and have a productive work environment? This session will provide an overview of the various generations commonly found in the workplace\, highlighting their unique characteristics\, strengths\, and the value each brings to the team. We will explore different communication styles\, offering insights into how each generation gives and receives information. The discussion will also cover effective strategies for motivating individuals across the generational lines\, fostering collaboration\, and enhancing team morale. By understanding these dynamics\, we can gain practical tools to create a more inclusive\, engaging\, and productive work environment. Rebecca will address ‘The Art of Design Review’ going over the basics of a design review\, when they are used\, and the toolkit an engineer needs to successfully conduct one. Participants will walk away with strategies to implement in their next design review to maximize the time of your team to bring your project to life! \nMeeting details will be provided after completing the registration.
