Distinguished New Engineer

Kimberly Lam is a product manager for Azure Edge at Microsoft. She is responsible for managing commercial appliance solutions within the portfolio, including Azure Stack Hyperconverged Infrastructure (HCI). In this role, she manages teams and the life cycle of the hardware and software solutions that support customer workloads — on premises, at the edge, and in the cloud. These products are used by customers in industries such as telecommunications, retail, oil and gas, and more.

Prior to Microsoft, Lam worked at Lockheed Martin for five years in a variety of roles. She began her career as a systems engineer for the U.S. Navy’s Aegis program. She was selected to be a part of the Engineering Leadership Development Program, which she completed in 2020. Through the program, Lam held three roles that ranged from modeling and analysis to project engineering and operations analysis, and supported customers such as the U.S. Army, Missile Defense Agency, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and Space Development Agency.

Lam is proud of her heritage as a Chinese American woman and first-generation engineer. She channels affinity for her background and identity through employee resource groups and various organizations. Throughout her time at Lockheed Martin, she encouraged diversity in engineering and was recognized in 2017 with a Diversity and Inclusion Award for outstanding support as the activities lead. At Microsoft, she co-leads the Women and Allies of Azure Edge and is an active member of the Technical Women at Microsoft and Asians at Microsoft employee resource groups.

Lam has been a Society of Women Engineers member for the past decade and recently became a life member. During this time, she has held leadership roles at the section, region, and Society levels. She is the current president of the Santa Clara Valley Section. At the Society level, Lam recently served as scholarship coordinator, where she led the team disbursing more than 300 scholarships and launched the Society’s first global pilot program. She has also served as a coach for the leadership coaching committee and the coordinator of the SWE Leadership Development Program. As a collegian, she served as president of the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) Section and Region collegiate senator.

Lam earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering at NJIT. At graduation, she was recognized with four unique awards: the Presidential Leadership Award – Undergraduate; Outstanding Overall Senior for the Newark College of Engineering; Outstanding Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Senior; and Madame Mau Outstanding Female Engineering Student. Lam also holds an M.S. in operations research from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a product management certificate, both of which she completed virtually while working full time.

Lam is a self-identified “Jersey girl” who currently lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her partner and corgi-like rescue dog. In her free time, she likes to try new restaurants and bars, practice her calligraphy, improve her tennis and skiing skills, and mentor young women.
