1947-
I joined SWE as a Student Member in 1968. As I have moved from one technical area to another, SWE has been a constant in my career. It meets my professional needs in ways other technical societies cannot: networking (I had my job with NASA because of another SWE member who worked for them at the time I was looking for a career change); associating with other women engineers who share my experiences; the opportunity to learn from other women, including periodic meetings of the International Conference of Women Engineers and Scientists; and the chance to share with students and young engineers who are just beginning their careers, in the hopes that what I have learned can help them in planning their futures.
I retired from NASA in early January 1998 and now do a little (and I do mean a little) consulting locally. That’s how I want it. Work was beginning to interfere with my outside activities, such as SWE, the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, the American Society of Safety Engineers, sleeping in late, playing with the cats (when we’re not all taking naps), etc. It’s a good life!
