Colleen Layman

Colleen Scholl (Layman) served as the SWE FY16 President.

Colleen Scholl (Layman), PE is a Senior Vice President with HDR, an architecture, engineering, and environmental services firm headquartered in Omaha, NE.  In her current role as Enterprise Risk Director, she drives the corporate framework for identifying, assessing, managing, and monitoring enterprise-wide risks and building tools and processes to support risk-informed decision-making and strategic planning.

Colleen began her SWE leadership career with her election as President of the Lehigh Valley Section in 2003. She went on to serve in a wide variety of SWE leadership positions at the local, regional, and Society levels culminating in her service at the highest Society level as President in FY16. She was on the SWE Board of Directors from 2012 through 2016 and has been a member of the awards, ethics, nominating, scholarship, and finance committees.

For decades, Colleen has taken an active role in driving the premier technical conference in the field of industrial water and wastewater treatment, the International Water Conference (IWC). She was selected for membership on the executive planning committee in 2009 and served two consecutive terms as the conference chair in 2014 and 2015. Colleen is a two-time recipient of the IWC’s Paul Cohen Award and was recognized in 2016 with the IWC Annual Merit Award.

A registered professional engineer, Colleen holds BS and MS degrees in engineering and an MBA in management of engineering and technology. In 2019, she was appointed by the Governor of Wisconsin to the Wisconsin State Examining Board of Architects, Landscape Architects, Professional Engineers, Designers, Professional Land Surveyors, and Registered Interior Designers. She is an active member of ASME and serves as the Responsible Engineer in Charge (REIC) for the Princeton Chapter of the Engineers Without Borders Peru Team.

Colleen resides in Whitewater, Wisconsin with her husband Mark and two furry feline children.
