Margaret Layne, P.E.

1957-

Margaret Layne, P.e.I joined SWE as a student in 1979. After I graduated, I moved to San Francisco, where I worked for Bechtel and was a member of the Golden Gate Section, but I did not make it to very many meetings. I seem to recall there were a lot of people at the meetings, and I was shy. Then I moved to Houston and got a little more involved there, but I didn’t really get active in SWE until I moved to North Carolina to attend graduate school.

The North Carolina Section (now known as the Eastern North Carolina Section) was small, and they welcomed me with open arms and put me right to work! I was elected treasurer, then section president, then section representative. A fellow graduate student got me involved on the Student Activities Committee (SAC) as a regional coordinator, and the rest is history. I went on to chair SAC and the Scholarship Committee before moving to Tallahassee and being elected to the Board as Director of the Southeast Region. After that, it was Secretary, a year as chair of the Statistics Committee, then Vice-President for Member Services, President-Elect, and President last year. That’s probably more than you wanted to know!

I currently live in an area assigned to the Members-at-Large. There are not very many engineers in the Florida panhandle. I elect to be a member of Florida’s First Coast Section in Jacksonville, which is about 150 miles away. I look forward to regional conferences and national conventions for opportunities to network, renew old friendships and make new ones.
