Spain Tertiary Education

According to the World Economic Forum Global Gender Gap 2024 Report, 26.6% of Spanish graduates in engineering, manufacturing, and construction were women. According to data from Spain's Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities Sistema Integrado de Información Universitaria (SIIU), women make up a smaller proportion of students enrolling and graduating from engineering, industry, and construction programs when compared to men in Spain.

According to data from 2024 by the “El Servicio Público de Empleo Estatal”, the Spanish State Employment Public Service, women constitute a substantial portion of the country’s labor force population. In 2024, approximately 11.5 million women participated in the labor force. Among them, over 10.1 million were employed, while nearly 1.4 million were unemployed and actively looking for work. In 2022, the share of women science and engineering researchers in Spain was 46.5% (Elsevier). Although women engineering scholars represent almost half of researchers in Spain, their research impact is less than that of their male counterparts.

Scores from the international examination the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) allow analysis of the performance of boys and girls across various grades in the Spanish educational system. The PISA is a series of reports comparing 15-year-olds academic performance across subjects and countries. TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) is a global evaluation given every four years to students in the fourth grade to measure their understanding of mathematics and science concepts.
