Mexico STEM Workforce

STEM Professionals: Data from the fourth quarter of 2020 the National Jobs and Occupations Survey (ENOE) shows that while among certain STEM fields, engineering employed the most workers (over 2 million), the representation of women was the lowest in engineering. Less than 20% of employed professionals in engineering were women while 55% and 62% of professionals in health sciences and biological sciences were women.

Still, Observatorio Laboral (labor observation) program shows that in 2020, female representation among employed professionals varies from 1% to 52% across computing and engineering fields. The lowest female representation in employed professionals were observed in automotive, marine and aeronautical engineering (1.1%), civil engineering and construction (6.7%), electricity and energy generation (7.5%), and electronics and automation (7.7%). On the other hand, women are better represented among occupied professionals in the fields of chemical engineering (38.8%), environmental engineering and technology (45.4%), and food industry (52.2%).
