In 2022, the share of women scientists and engineers in research occupations in Italy was 36.4%, according to UNESCO UIS, while Elsevier reported 46.4% of published research was led by women. Although women engineering scholars represent over one-third of researchers in Italy, their research impact is less than that of their male counterparts.
Elsevier provided a field-weighted citation impact (FWCI) indicator to measure the academic impact of a publication. Examining research impact by gender in Italy reveals women have a lower research impact in engineering than men, and this finding holds across career stage. Although women scholars represent almost half of researchers in Italy, their (1.22) FWCI in 2022 was less than that of their male counterparts (1.30).
