SWE Member Charlanda Watson shares her journey into #engineering and how she ultimately found the perfect role with a company that embraces #diversity, encourages #innovative thinking and challenges her to learn and grow.

“My parents worked so hard when I was young. My father often worked multiple jobs with at least one always involving something entrepreneurial. His industrious, risk-taking spirit inspired me and pushed me towards my own goals. He instilled in me that “what the mind can perceive, you can achieve.” When my father asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I knew I wanted to do something different and significant, as well as be in a position to help take care of my family. So, I took what I loved to do in secondary school and combined it with my desire to be creative and think differently. After ruling out other career paths, I came to the realization that engineering was the best direction for me. But I needed to decide what kind of engineering degree I should pursue. Possessing a strong interest in art and creativity, I sought to find an engineering program that included elements of design. So, I enrolled in a summer program at the local university that allowed me to learn the fundamentals of aerodynamic materials and design cars using AutoCAD. I was blown away by being able to see and do FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) 3D printing. I just knew I had to do this full time as an engineer!”

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (@NASA) announced on April 9 that its new Artemis program will land the first person of color on the moon and the first woman and the next man on the lunar south pole by 2024.

The only people who touched the moon’s surface in 1972 were white men. No humans have ever visited the lunar south pole before, according to CNN.

"Women and people of color represent a significant contributing portion of all facets of NASA's workforce,” Bhavya Lal, acting NASA chief of staff, told CNN.

"So much of what NASA does is inspire the next generation, but in order to be successful in that inspiration, we have to continue to be leaders when it comes to diversity and equity,” Lal said. @glblctzn #womeninspace #equality #space #leaders #tuesdaythoughts

👉🏻Emily Scott, a 9-year-old student at Charter Oak Elementary in Temple, had her artwork selected to be taken to the International Space Station later this year via a @spacex rocket.

The Belton Independent School District student from Charter Oak Elementary student recently completed a class presentation about Sally Ride — a physicist who became the first American woman to enter space in 1983.

“Sally wrote kids books and I’ve been reading her book ‘To Space & Back,’” Emily told the Telegram. “She shows pictures of the rocket ship, and she talks about different subjects with space. She made me interested to go to space too.

“I want to go to space when I grow up, and I want other girls to go to space if they want to … so the people that I drew on my (spaceship) drawing are my friends,” Emily said. @kdhnews #girlsinspace #engineering #nationalroboticsweek
