If you have been following SWE Magazine these last few years, you will note that it is an award-winning publication evidenced by the number of editorial and design awards it has received each year. And in 2022, it was no different.
Once again, SWE Magazine has earned several APEX Awards, the annual award program for excellence in graphic design, editorial content, and achievement in overall effective communications. This international competition for communications professionals is now in its 34th year. The awards recognize the work of corporate, independent, and nonprofit publishers, writers, editors, graphic designers, illustrators, and photographers, who create content for print, web, electronic, and social media platforms.
This year SWE Magazine received three Grand Awards and nine Awards of Excellence. The organization’s Grand Award is its highest honor. The organization stated more than 1,200 entries had been submitted for which 100 Grand Awards were presented to honor outstanding work in 14 major categories, with 485 Awards of Excellence recognizing exceptional work in 100 subcategories.
Grand Awards
Receiving Grand Awards were Seabright McCabe, contributing writer; Anne Perusek, SWE director of editorial and publications; and Christine Coolick, contributing writer.
McCabe received a Grand Award in the Environment category for her story, “Unbreakable Bricks: Transforming Plastic Waste,” published in the Spring 2021 issue. The story focuses on an engineer whose company converts plastic waste into sustainable alternative building blocks.
Perusek received a Grand Award for the entire Fall 2021 issue in the Magazines, Journals, and Tabloids category. The issue, with its cover story, “Transforming Corporate Boards,” presents stories that explore the ways diversity is transforming corporate boards and cites women engineers who are leaders in academia.
Coolick’s story, “Advancing Careers While Caring for Others,” received a Grand Award in the Writing category. Published in the Winter 2022 issue, the story explores how women’s experiences differ drastically around the world based on policies and practices that are in place to support professionals who also serve as caregivers.
Awards of Excellence
Art Director JoAnn Dickey received four Awards of Excellence for graphic design work. She received recognition in the Design and Layout – Features category for “Disruptions Move Supply Chain into the Spotlight,” in the Winter 2022 issue and for “Don’t Stop Me Now: Even the COVID Pandemic Couldn’t Halt STEM K-12 Outreach,” from the State of Women in Engineering 2021 issue. She also received recognition in the Design and Illustration – Covers for the Winter 2022 issue cover, “Leadership for a New Resilience,” and in Design and Illustration – Spreads for the feature story, “Transforming Corporate Boards,” from the Fall 2021 issue.
In the Feature Writing category, Coolick received the award for “The State of Infrastructure,” a story from the Fall 2021 issue; and contributing writer Sandra Guy received the award for the story, “Male Allies Must Focus on the Details to Help Women Succeed,” from the Conference 2021 issue.
In the category Electronic Media – Apps & Podcasts, Perusek along with SWE Archivist Troy Eller English were honored for the subject of their podcast, “SWE Stories, Tales from the Archives: Getting from There to Here in Public Policy.” SWE podcasts address issues and events important to women in engineering and technology.
APEX continued recognition of work in a category it introduced in 2021, Covid-19 Media. In the Government/Association subsection, Guy received the award for the story, “Examining the Impacts of COVID-19 on the Engineering Pipeline,” which appeared in the State of Women in Engineering 2021 issue.
Perusek also received an Award of Excellence in the One-of-A-Kind Publications category for the entire State of Women in Engineering 2021 issue.
