Types of Professional Membership

Join SWE as a Professional member, whether you’re a novice or expert in engineering/STEM, anywhere globally. Enjoy benefits and a diverse network, with discounts automatically applied at checkout based on the answers you provide in your membership application.

A person who supports the goals of the Society but does not qualify for membership based on employment is eligible for an Associate membership. Associates do not have the right to serve on the senate or board of directors.

Cost: $100/fiscal year

A person who is a full-time precollege educator supports the goals of the Society. Learn more about the resources available for precollege educators.

Cost: $20/fiscal year 

To promote global access and pricing equity, SWE offers tiered membership discounts to individuals residing in more than 180 countrieswith significant economic variance relative to the United States. Discounts range from 50% to 67% off the standard one-year Professional membership rate and do not apply to Life memberships.

Cost: A one-time donation of $2,000 or an installment donation plan of four annual $500 donations.

A person who is or has been actively engaged in engineering work is eligible to become a professional member, if they either hold a baccalaureate or advanced degree in engineering, engineering, technology, or a science related to engineering; or has at least five years engineering experience.

Cost: $100/fiscal year 

A person who returns to full-time student status is eligible for discounted professional membership. 

Cost: $20/fiscal year

Professional Back to School members receive special pricing on SWE membership, but are not eligible for reduced registration for WE annual conferences and events.

University graduates with graduation dates within the past 24 months and are now working or looking for employment can join as a Recent Graduate member. No promo code is needed ― the discount is automatically applied at checkout based on the answers you provide in your membership application.

Employee-Sponsored Membership (ESM)

Employer-Sponsored Membership (ESM) is a cost-effective program that enables organizations to purchase SWE memberships in bulk to support their engineers and technologists. Through ESM, employers provide their employees with global access to SWE’s programs, professional development resources, and community network. Each ESM package includes up to 200 professional memberships.

Senior and Fellow Grades

Senior and Fellow member status, if applicable, is notated on  accounts in the SWE Member Portal. Additional information on Senior and Fellow membership levels can be found in the SWE Bylaws on the About page.

A person who is or has been actively engaged in engineering work is eligible to hold Senior status, if one of the following criteria is met:

  1. Holds a baccalaureate or advanced degree in engineering, engineering technology, or a science related to engineering and has at least ten years of engineering experience; or
  2. Has at least 15 years of engineering experience, indicating engineering competency and achievement.

Any member who has received the SWE Achievement Award shall be automatically made a Senior member, except that of a fellow of the Society who shall retain the fellow grade.  SWE HQ reviews the member roster on an annual basis and automatically updates members who qualify for Senior membership. Members who believe they qualify for Senior membership may submit proof of their credentials along with their SWE ID to membership@swe.org for review.

A SWE member who has been a senior member for at least 10 years or a member for at least 20 years may be chosen to become a Fellow of the Society, in recognition of significant and long-term service to the advancement of women in the engineering profession. Fellow members are chosen yearly from eligible members who have been nominated via the SWE Awards Program and are recognized at the WE Annual conference.
