Madeleine “Maddie” Maver is Littoral Combat Ship and Multi-Mission Surface Combatant (LCS and MMSC) cybersecurity lead for Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems. In this role, she is responsible for ensuring cyber certification and maintaining cyber-resilient postures of both platforms for ship delivery. Maver joined Lockheed Martin in 2017, in the Command and Decision group’s engineering leadership development program. With each rotation, she rapidly leveraged new knowledge and skills into cybersecurity subject matter expertise. During her final rotation, she coordinated technical schedules and was a contributor on the communications, networks, and infrastructure team, assisting the cyber upgrade of LCS sustainment ships. She also ran lab improvement capital projects for the MMSC.
Currently, Maver is tasked with delivering a compliant cyber baseline for systems on LCS. This includes performing quarterly cyber scans, creating plans of action and milestones, mitigating risks, and patching and updating configurations. She is intimately familiar with combat management and navigation system, and the network backbone. She travels when called upon to install products and verify functionality.
For example, Maver traveled to Marinette, Wisconsin, during the COVID-19 pandemic to support the LCS-21 dock trials, and led security demonstrations, verified virtual machine configurations, and installed cyber patches. She worked through the demonstration with the customer leadership, ensured all hosts had the proper system security agent running, verified all products were deployed correctly, and earned the customer’s acceptance. As she was about to leave, a hardware failure occurred. Maver stayed an additional week to restore the system in time for sea trials.
Maver also supports the MMSC class of ships, and leads planning for shipwide cyber certifications. In one instance, requirements were changed midexecution, resulting in challenging negotiations. Maver delivered a technical impact statement that outlined the engineering path for execution. She then led the greater MMSC industry team through basis of estimate generation to ensure funding for the new technical scope. While in this role, Maver has also worked toward her Security+ certification, passing the test in early 2021.
An active volunteer and a SWE member, Maver is networking lead on the Women’s Impact Network board in Moorestown, New Jersey. She organizes events with other business resource groups, including PRIDE, PAAN, and iGen. Maver cites her proudest accomplishment as running Lockheed Martin’s 2019 Women in Engineering Day, the same program that inspired her as a high school sophomore to become a Lockheed engineer.
Maver holds a B.S. in mechanical engineering, with a concentration in thermal fluid systems, from Villanova University, and an M.Eng. in systems engineering from Cornell University.
Maver credits her support system with keeping her happy at work and at home, including her Lockheed team, her husband Kevin Long, her parents Ron and Melissa Maver, and her siblings Michael and Sarah Maver. Outside of work, she enjoys reading books, watching the Philadelphia Eagles, going to the beach, hiking, and running.
