SWE Magazine won two national and five regional awards in the American Society of Business Publication Editors’ annual “Azbees” competition for design and editorial excellence. ASBPE is a professional membership organization for writers, editors, and designers dedicated to recognizing editorial excellence, fostering a diverse and inclusive community of publications professionals, providing educational and job advancement resources, and raising the profile of the business-to-business media.

This was the first time the magazine entered the awards competition. SWE Magazine won a bronze national award for the design of an opening spread using an illustration for the feature article “In Support of Sports” and another bronze national award for an opening spread using a typographical treatment for the feature article “Maintaining Engineering Ethics.” Both were designed by art director JoAnn Dickey of JoAnn Dickey Design and appeared in the Conference 2023 issue.

In the Azbee awards, publications first compete on regional levels; regional winners are often eligible for national awards. The opening spread of “In Support of Sports” received a gold regional award and “Maintaining Engineering Ethics” won a bronze regional award.

- The magazine also won the following regional awards:
- Silver, for online state of the industry report, awarded to “Women in Engineering: A Review of the 2022 Literature,” in the State of Women in Engineering 2023 issue. Peter Meiksins, Ph.D., CV Garcia, Natali Huggins, Maya Menon, and Olivia Ryan authored the report.
- Bronze, for cover design using an illustration, awarded to the State of Women in Engineering 2023 issue, designed by Dickey.
- Bronze, for cover design using a photograph, awarded to the Fall 2023 issue, “Tech Stewards Bring Perspective,” also designed by Dickey.
This year’s Azbees competition drew a total of 917 entries from 283 publications across the United States.
