Communications Concepts Inc. has selected the Society of Women Engineers for two Grand Awards and five Awards of Excellence in its 2024 Awards for Publication Excellence (APEX) design and editorial competition. Grand Awards are the highest honors in the competition.
The Fall 2023 SWE Magazine cover feature, “Tech Stewards Expand the Scope of Responsible Engineering,” by contributing writer Sandra Guy, won a Grand Award for writing.

Episode 216 of Diverse: A SWE Podcast, “Asian Americans in STEM: Vietnamese Refugee Stories,” won a Grand Award for electronic media.

SWE Magazine also won APEX Awards of Excellence in the following categories:
- Magazines, journals, and tabloids/print, for the 2023 State of Women in Engineering issue, edited by Anne Perusek, SWE emerita director of editorial and publications.
- Writing about history and biography, for “What’s Past Is Prologue: The Future Is Ours to Write,” by SWE archivist Troy Eller English, in the Spring 2023 issue.
- Coverage of public concerns and trending topics, for the feature “Creating Climate Resilience,” by contributing writer Seabright McCabe, in the Fall 2023 issue.
- Design and illustration of covers, for the Winter 2024 issue (“Stirred Up”), by art director JoAnn Dickey.
- Design and illustration of opening spreads, for the feature “In Support of Sports,” in the Conference 2023 issue, by art director JoAnn Dickey.

Additionally, three SWE entries into the 2024 Folio: Eddies and Ozzies Awards competition for editorial and design excellence have been named finalists. The Folio awards are considered the “Oscars” of publishing.
Two episodes of Diverse: A SWE Podcast are finalists in the category of podcast, culture or community. They are episode 218, “Transgender Voices in Engineering with Bree Fram,” and episode 216, “Asian Americans in STEM: Vietnamese Refugee Stories.”
SWE Magazine is a finalist for feature design in media published by an association, nonprofit, professional, or membership organization. The finalist is “In Support of Sports,” published in the Conference 2023 issue, by art director JoAnn Dickey.
The winners of the Folio competition will be announced Oct. 22.
