Professional Development Is Part of Our DNA
Having just returned from WE Local Bengaluru, where the Society of Women Engineers welcomed more than 1,500 participants, I am honored to reflect on SWE’s remarkable global growth and our continued commitment to supporting our members with outstanding professional development opportunities.
What began in 1950 as a pioneering group of women dedicated to advancing their place in engineering has grown into a network of more than 50,000 members across 85 countries, united by a shared vision of a world with gender equity and parity in engineering and technology.
SWE’s expansion across international borders is a powerful reflection of the universal need for connection, mentorship, and professional support among women in engineering and allied technical fields.
Today, our members are leading innovations, breaking barriers, and driving change in every corner of the globe — from North America and Europe to India, Brazil, and throughout Africa, and beyond. With each new global affiliate, collegiate or professional section, and partner organization, we reinforce our mission: To empower women to achieve their full potential as engineers and leaders.
As SWE grows globally, we remain steadfast in our promise to deliver high-quality, relevant, and accessible professional development programming, meeting the needs of our members at all career levels. Our conferences are a cornerstone of that promise. Whether you’re a collegiate member seeking career guidance, a mid-level professional preparing for your next leadership role, or a senior engineer mentoring the next generation, SWE’s in-person events offer a rich environment for growth. The energy I experienced in India this spring was nothing short of spectacular.
Our flagship annual conference, WE, now draws more than 19,000 attendees and includes hundreds of sessions led by subject matter experts, powerful keynote presentations, and a dynamic career fair with opportunities spanning from internships to executive positions. Similarly, our regional and international conferences are tailored to provide localized networking, learning, and inspiration while reflecting the global nature of engineering today. This year, all five WE Local conferences were at capacity, and we have larger venues planned to welcome even more participants for 2026.
However, professional development doesn’t end when the conference lights dim. Through SWE’s Advance Learning Center, members can access hundreds of courses, webinars, and certificate programs that address the technical, leadership, and career advancement topics most relevant to today’s engineers. We recognize that our members live busy, demanding lives, and our digital platforms provide the flexibility for them to learn on their own schedule from anywhere in the world.
SWE will continue to innovate and expand our professional development resources to meet the evolving needs of our global membership. We are actively investing in new digital tools, strengthening our international collaborations, and listening closely to our members’ feedback on professional learning.
I thank our members for making SWE a vibrant, inclusive, and forward-thinking community. Together, we are not just advancing careers; we are advancing the entire engineering profession.
Those pioneering women and men gathered in 1950 would be proud to see how their legacy has evolved and expanded. We honor them by growing and remaining relevant to our members and stakeholders.
Let’s keep learning, connecting, and uplifting each other. Together, we are building a brighter and more equitable future in engineering.
