Topic: Why would I want to be an ABET evaluator?
Speaker: Donna Reese
Chances are if you got a BS in engineering or computing from an American university, that degree was accredited by ABET, the organization that provides specialized accreditation for engineering, computing, engineering technology and applied and natural science programs around the world. ABET is a non-profit organization that relies on volunteers from its member societies to conduct evaluations of academic programs in these disciplines around the world. In 2025, SWE became a full member society of ABET and SWE members may apply to become program evaluators for ABET. Donna will talk about her experiences as an ABET volunteer and explain why others might want to participate as well.
Donna Reese is a life-time member of SWE and was faculty advisor for the Mississippi State student section for 10 years during her time as Associate Dean of the Bagley College of Engineering and Department Head for the Computer Science and Engineering Department. She retired from MSU in 2017 but remains active in computing through service to ABET as a program evaluator and team chair. She moved to Huntsville, AL in 2021 to be closer to her children and grandchildren.
