Embrace Your Story — And SWE’s
Welcome to the issue of SWE Magazine dedicated to WE25, where we celebrate not only the exciting momentum of the Society of Women Engineers, but
also the remarkable milestones and stories that shape who we are — individually and collectively.
The SWE annual conference remains the world’s largest gathering of women and their allies in engineering and technology. It brings together members and supporters from around the globe to connect, learn, and grow. Whether you are attending keynotes, breakout sessions, affinity group meetups, industry tours, the awards ceremony, the career fair, or Invent It. Build It., there is truly something for everyone. Personally, I always make it a point to attend at least one session outside my comfort zone. It’s a powerful reminder that learning is a lifelong journey.
And learning can continue in the pages of this issue. For example, you’ll find an insightful article exploring the technology driving the consumer recycling industry, a sector I knew little about before, but now appreciate far more thanks to this piece.
As we embrace our individual stories, we also honor the collective story of SWE as we celebrate the Society’s 75th anniversary. On May 27–28, 1950, 61 women engineers and students gathered at The Cooper Union’s Green Engineering Camp in New Jersey to establish a unified, national Society. Seventy-five years later, SWE is a truly global organization, with approximately 12% of members based outside the United States. In fact, SWE’s Global Ambassador Program recently received a 2025 Power of Associations Gold Award from ASAE: The Center for Association Leadership. The program stands as a model for other membership organizations.
Reflecting its global growth, SWE has proudly hosted WE Local events across the U.S., India, and Europe, and for the first time this year, Brazil. I had the privilege of attending WE Local Campinas. It was filled with energy, innovation, and many firsts, including SWE’s first major conference where the primary language was not English. From moderating panel discussions to connecting with SWE members, it was an experience rich in culture and community. I offer my sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of this historic event.
No matter what conference you attend, I encourage you to explore boldly. Attend sessions you might not typically choose. Sit next to someone new. You never know what insight, opportunity, or connection might emerge from taking a small step outside your routine.
In addition to celebrating 75 years of SWE, this year also marks the 10th anniversary of SWENext. You can learn more about its history in this issue as well. While SWE has long championed precollege outreach, the formal launch of SWENext expanded its reach and impact significantly. Today, SWENext clubs span the globe thanks to the dedication of members and volunteers who inspire and support the next generation of engineers.
Of course, alongside our celebrations, we acknowledge ongoing challenges. This issue also includes an important update on how SWE is supporting its collegiate sections through difficult times. Our commitment to our community remains steadfast, especially when support is most needed.
As we continue through FY26, I encourage you to Embrace Your Story. Honor the milestones — large and small — that have shaped your journey. Recognize the successes, the setbacks, and the pivots. They are all essential parts of who you are and who we are as a Society.
Thank you for being part of SWE’s story and for helping to write the next chapter.
