Sara Morey

Exxon Mobil Corporation

For exceptional technical leadership in the field of environmental engineering; for expanding SWE’s reach within her company; and for inspiring others to care for the environment through community service.

Sara Morey is the environmental and regulatory manager for Unconventional Upstream at ExxonMobil. She joined the company in 2009 and currently manages a team of environmental specialists that provide world-class technical innovation to ExxonMobil. She is a subject matter expert in the field of environmental engineering and has led teams of engineers to support multibillion-dollar projects globally.

Over the last 10 years, Morey has held multiple roles at ExxonMobil within the field of environmental engineering, with increasing complexity and responsibilities, and she has developed into a technical leader. She began her ExxonMobil career as a project manager for ExxonMobil Environmental Services Company (EMES). She spent eight years contributing to, improving, and developing technical advancements for EMES, managing a remediation portfolio, leading a research and development team, and undertaking a special planning assignment supporting the senior leadership. Morey then went to work for ExxonMobil Research and Engineering (EMRE), the engineering and learning organization for the company’s downstream operations. She started in EMRE as a senior wastewater engineer and was quickly promoted to group lead of the capital projects group, where she supported the rapidly expanding projects portfolio.

Her success in this role was recognized with her promotion to senior planner for ExxonMobil’s corporate engineering organization, where she had significant visibility and influence. She was responsible for more than 500 engineers, led the planning and budgeting cycle, and served as liaison with business partners. Morey collaborated with the vice president on strategy and coordination of tactical decisions to run the organization. In this role, she influenced many key business initiatives and provided recommendations on behalf of the corporation. For example, she played a key role in the strategic structural improvements vision chartered by the company’s CEO, which enabled competitive cost efficiencies.

A Society of Women Engineers member since college, Morey joined ExxonMobil’s SWE network as treasurer and recruiting team member, establishing the company as an Employer Sponsored Membership participant and doubling SWE membership at ExxonMobil in three years. In 2019, she became lead coordinator and worked with senior management to set objectives, drive learnings from SWE across the corporation, and lead efforts to engage ExxonMobil at WE conferences. She expanded ExxonMobil’s SWE program to Europe and India and helped the largest group in the company’s history attend WE19.

Morey is active in her community, leading ExxonMobil’s annual Earth Day coordination and planning efforts. She also volunteers with groups such as Junior Achievement and with her daughter’s Girl Scouts troop.

She earned a B.S. in biological and environmental engineering at Cornell University and an M.S. in civil and environmental engineering at Duke University. Morey is married to Jochen Meyer, Ph.D., a professor of neuroscience at Baylor College of Medicine. She is the proud mother of two daughters.
