Amanda Muller, Ph.D., is a consulting artificial intelligence (AI) systems engineer and technical fellow emeritus at Northrop Grumman, where she serves as chief of responsible technology. In this role, she leads development and delivery of responsible technology processes and policy across the company.
Previously, Dr. Muller was the responsible AI lead for Northrop Grumman’s AI Campaign. Before that, she worked for Northrop Grumman Space Systems in Redondo Beach, California, as a systems engineer leading user experience teams for several restricted space programs, and conducting user research in operational environments around the world. Prior positions include systems engineer on state health and human services programs; human factors engineer in Aurora, Colorado; and human systems integration lead for airborne platforms in Melbourne, Florida. In addition to her program roles, Dr. Muller has been a mentor in the company’s Mentoring the Technical Professional program for eight years.
Dr. Muller’s publications include a book chapter in Emerging Trends in Systems Engineering Leadership: Practical Research from Women Leaders, and peer-reviewed articles in Information Fusion, The Journal of Defense Modeling and Simulation, WSEAS Transactions on Advances in Engineering Education, and Annals of Biomedical Engineering. She is a certified systems engineering professional and a professional Scrum Master.
Dr. Muller navigated many career obstacles while accommodating her husband’s military career amid frequent moves, turning each into an opportunity to reach higher and make a positive impact on others. Initially, Dr. Muller volunteered with many local and national organizations that promote and encourage women and girls toward STEM careers. Now, she focuses on mentoring and enabling career women to reach their full potential.
A Society of Women Engineers life member, Dr. Muller joined as a professional member of the Space Coast Section, where she developed engineering workshops for Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day, “WOW! That’s Engineering,” and Girls Exploring Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. She served on the SWE Space Coast Section scholarship committee, chaired the scholarship committee for the Rocky Mountain Section after moving to Colorado, and served as a reviewer for the national SWE scholarship program.
In 2007, she received the Distinguished New Woman Engineer of the Year Award from the SWE Space Coast Section. A sought-after speaker, she has been a featured presenter at several WE conferences.
Dr. Muller regularly volunteers as a judge at local science fairs and supports charitable organizations dedicated to racial and gender equality, including Black Lives Matter, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, and the Human Rights Campaign.
Dr. Muller holds a B.S. and an M.S. with high distinction in biomedical engineering, both from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and a Ph.D. in engineering with a focus on human factors engineering from Wright State University.
In her spare time, Dr. Muller enjoys hiking, board games, travel, and spending time with her husband and two cats.
