SWE Magazine and Diverse, a SWE podcast, extended their winning streak by earning top honors in the 2024 FOLIO: Eddie and Ozzie competition. FOLIO is the publishing industry’s most competitive editorial and design competition. The Eddie award recognizes editorial excellence while the Ozzie honors superior design.
In 2024, SWE Magazine won an Ozzie award for best feature design for the article, “In Support of Sports,” by art director JoAnn Dickey of JoAnn Dickey Design. The feature, which appeared in the Conference 2023 issue, focused on designers who are improving the safety of women’s sports by creating equipment and apparel specifically for women athletes. The feature design opened with a colorful display of sports balls, their circular shapes repeated throughout the headline text. Professional photos of athletes, inventors, and equipment rounded out the visual presentation.
In the Eddie competition, Diverse captured a top award and an honorable mention. Podcast episode 218, “Transgender Voices in Engineering with Bree Fram,” earned the top award in the culture and community category. The podcast was released in coordination with Pride Month in the United States in 2023. Fram, an active-duty lieutenant colonel and astronautical engineer in the U.S. Space Force — and one of the highest-ranking transgender officers who is out in the U.S. military — spoke with host Sam East. Fram discussed her professional and personal journey as an engineer and a member of the LGBTQ+ community.
Episode 216, “Asian Americans in STEM: Vietnamese Refugee Stories,” earned an honorable mention. In this episode, SWE recognized Asian Pacific American Heritage Month by focusing on the personal stories of Hang Loi and Tracy Nguyen, O.D., two Asian American women in STEM who escaped Vietnam as children during the fall of Saigon. They spoke with SWE board member Jennifer Chen Morikawa, sharing their moving accounts of fleeing Vietnam, starting a new life in the United States, and how these experiences influenced them to pursue careers in STEM.
In 2024 SWE Magazine also won seven awards from the American Society of Business Publication Editors, or ASBPE, and six APEX awards, or Awards for Publication Excellence. One of those APEX awards was a Grand Award, the highest honor in the competition. Diverse also won an APEX Grand Award in 2024.
