Distinguished Service Award
Cecilia (Ceal) D. Craig, Ph.D., F.SWE
For vast contributions to SWE’s framework; for demonstrating superb skill in streamlining its processes; and for decades spent inspiring young women to pursue STEM careers.

Cecilia D. Craig, Ph.D., F.SWE, is a retired technology and manufacturing executive with more than 35 years of experience in high-tech industries — from space shuttle printed circuit boards to typewriters, personal computers, disk drives, and Ethernet switches. She earned a B.S.M.E. in mechanical engineering at The Ohio State University, an M.S.E. in mechanical engineering at California State University, Fullerton, and a Ph.D. in education at Walden University.
Dr. Craig is a career-long, active member of the Society of Women Engineers, first at Ohio State, then in the Los Angeles, Texas, and Santa Clara Valley sections, holding officer, section representative, and committee chair positions. She served as deputy director for Region A and was the achievement award committee chair for two years in the late 1980s.
A member of the Santa Clara Valley Section (SWE-SCV) since 1985, Dr. Craig has served as secretary, section representative, and most recently treasurer for four years. She has served on the awards and recognition task force for the past three years and was a member of the SWE Late Career and Retiree affinity group leadership team for three years, beginning in 2019. SWE awarded her Fellow Grade recognition in 2017.
Dr. Craig has focused her later years as a researcher exploring the influences of experiential activities like robotics and Get SET, a 25-year SWE-SCV program supporting young women’s career decisions. Her passion is research and supporting activities that inspire young women to pursue careers in engineering, physics, and computer science.
She is an active nonprofit board member serving as president of the San Francisco Bay Wildlife Society, a Friends group for the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge Complex; treasurer of Western Region Robotics Forum, providing support to the Bay Area high school robotics community; and president of the Silicon Valley Engineering Council.
Dr. Craig has also volunteered in For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) programs for 20 years, and for 10 years as judge or judge advisor for FIRST LEGO League robotics events for grades four to 12. She has judged at FIRST Robotics competitions in Bay Area high schools for the past four years.
The Ohio State University Engineering College recognized Dr. Craig in 2018 with its Distinguished Alumni Award for Career Achievement. Western Region Robotics Forum has recognized her twice, with its Volunteer of the Year award in 2018 and its Special Recognition award in 2006.
A widow since the 2023 death of her husband of 51 years, Tim, Dr. Craig has three cats and is an avid birder. She resides in San José, volunteers daily, and enjoys the Bay Area weather, thriving in this lively and technologically vibrant and diverse community.
