Tuyet-Hanh Schnell
Lockheed Martin
For decades of technical excellence; for lasting influence on diversity in engineering; and for dedicated service as a mentor and volunteer within SWE and in her community.
Tuyet-Hanh Schnell is a principal member, engineering staff and leads the weapons control system product team for an Aegis Japanese Program at Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems in Moorestown, New Jersey. She oversees the technical aspects, cost, and schedule for the design, development, integration, and test of software products for the Japanese navy.
She is also the responsible engineer for the weapons systems product on an experimental missile program. Schnell actively mentors and trains junior engineers to build their technical acumen and develop domain knowledge.
As an Agile coach for Lockheed Martin, Schnell teaches Agile workshops throughout the United States, guides programs in initiating new teams, helps teams evaluate their current processes for improvement opportunities, mentors new coaches, and briefs customers on processes and practices.
In her more than 30-year career at Lockheed Martin, she has held numerous technical leadership roles including technical director, integrated product team lead, responsible engineer, Scrum Master, and subject matter expert. In her functional leadership roles, she advocated for diverse candidate slates and interviewer panels for technical and leadership positions.
Schnell came to the states as a refugee and embraces that she is often the first or the only woman in the room or on a team and uses her position to empower other women. An active Society of Women Engineers member since 2004, Schnell is engaged with several SWE committees, including the outreach committee, the precollege and engagement support committee, the awards and recognition committee, and the Asian Connections and Late Career and Retiree affinity groups. She is the fiscal year 2025 president of the SWE Southern New Jersey Section.
Her SWE involvement has not gone unnoticed. She has received SWE’s Prism Award, Advocating Women in Engineering award, WE Local Engaged Advocate award, and WE Local Legacy Award. She received a special recognition award at the Women of Color Conference in 2022 and numerous Lockheed Martin awards, including its Women’s Impact Network (WIN) Mission Individual Award in 2023. She was honored by the U.S. Navy technical representative with an Aegis Excellence Award for Outstanding Performance. Her biography is featured in Asian American Women in Science: An Asian American History Book for Kids (Rockbridge Press, 2022).
Schnell holds a B.S. in engineering from the Stevens Institute of Technology and an M.S. in electrical engineering from Drexel University. Schnell is a certified lean Six Sigma green belt.
In addition to SWE, she is active in the Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers and the National Management Association and serves on the South Jersey District board of directors for Junior Achievement of New Jersey. She sings in her company choir and cantors at her church.
Schnell resides in New Jersey with her husband, also an engineer, and their two children.
