The engineering sector, experiencing high demand and offering lucrative salaries, is projected to grow by 9% from 2022 to 2032, faster than the average for all jobs, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Factors driving this growth include rising demand for technology and the need to replace those who are retiring or leaving the industry.
As of 2022, engineers earned a median salary of $91,010, well above the median for all jobs, which increased from $41,950 in 2020 to $46,310 by 2022. Yet the data show notable income disparities within engineering occupations, with wages varying based on industry demand, specialization, and technical expertise. Computer hardware engineers earned a median $132,360, for example, while agricultural engineers earned $83,260. Understanding these differences is key for career decisions and can inform broader discussions on income equality and fair compensation in various industries.
