Legislature’s War on Academia

Dr. Julie M. Smith is a senior education researcher at the Institute for Advancing Computing Education. She holds degrees in Curriculum & Instruction and Software Development. She also completed a doctoral program in Learning Technologies at the University of North Texas. Her research focus is computer science education, particularly the intersection of learning analytics, learning theory, and equity and excellence. She was a research assistant at MIT’s Teaching Systems Lab, working on a program aimed at improving equity in high school computer science programs; she is also co-editor of the SIGCSE Bulletin. Dr. Julie Smith is passionate about DEI efforts. She held a series of DEI discussions last year, and she will share some of her findings on this webinar. She will discuss the current legislature and how it affects academics in states with tough regulations, among other concerns related to the subject. Dr. Julie Smith will also share opportunities to build a cohort of academics who support DEI efforts.
