Practising Engineering in Canada: Practical Support for Internationally-Trained Engineers

Event Date:

March 1 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Calgary SWE is hosting a panel session on the topic of Practising Engineering in Canada – with a special emphasis on providing practical support for internationally trained engineers. Attendees will learn from shared experiences, get an insight into the P.Eng process through APEGA and receive practical advice on the job market from an engineering recruiter.

In this session, we have invited three panelists to provide insight and advise on practising engineering in Canada.

Mohamed El Daly, P.Eng., M.Sc. is a Director, Outreach & Product Services at APEGA. In his role, Mohamed oversees APEGA’s Outreach, and Diversity & Inclusion portfolios while providing guidance to hundreds of volunteers in APEGA’s 10 branches across the province. He has over 20 years of project management and leadership experience and has led many projects to successful completion. Mohamed is a registered professional engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA, holds a Masters degree in civil engineering, and is a graduate of Cornell University’s Diversity & Inclusion program.

Melissa Sim, currently serves as a Senior Recruiter at Akkodis, an IT Agency firm located in Calgary, Alberta. Originally from Singapore, Melissa began her professional journey in the field of Oil and Gas as a Geochemical technical specialist. During her initial years in the workforce, Melissa gained experience with an Oilfield Service Provider before venturing into the recruitment industry. She made a mid-career change when she joined NES Fircroft, where she dedicated three years as a full-cycle Engineering recruiter specializing in the Alberta Oil and Gas sector. This experience provided her an understanding of the intricacies within the energy industry but also equipped her with a comprehensive skill set in talent acquisition. As a Senior Recruiter at Akkodis, she continues to bring a wealth of experience and a global perspective to her role, contributing to the success of both the agency and the professionals she collaborates with.

Rachel Olayinka, P.Eng, is Nigerian by origin, and a Canadian by naturalization (arrived in Canada on May 4th, 2004). She is a Professional Engineer with APEGA, and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from OAU in Nigeria, as well as a Bachelor’s of Applied Petroleum Technology from SAIT in Calgary. She joined Suncor in 2012, left to do some Engineering design with an EP house in 2013 for about a year and half, but couldn’t stay away, and came back to Suncor in late 2014. She has worked with the New Assets Integration team for a few years, before joining the Fluids and Tailings Project Team at Baseplant in 2019.
