Lisa Durham (1962-2021)

Lisa Ann Durham was born in Davenport, Iowa in 1962. She attended Texas A&M University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in geological and earth science in 1985 and then attended Purdue University where she received a Master of Science degree in geosciences in 1989.

While at graduate school, Lisa began working at Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont, Illinois. Over the next 33 years, she provided technical expertise in environmental restoration for the U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the International Atomic Energy Agency. Lisa’s research interests were in soil and groundwater investigations, data analysis and interpretation, and modeling to support characterization and remediation at hazardous waste sites.

Truly, Lisa’s passion was in leadership and mentorship to increase diversity in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Her advocacy and encouragement of young women interested in STEM careers earned her Argonne’s Women in Science and Technology (WIST) Diversity Award, and she went on to lead the WIST program from 2013 to 2015. Through her success in mentoring, Lisa developed the Argonne Leadership Institute where she was the director from 2015 to 2018. Lisa’s achievements led her to accept an appointment in Washington, DC at the U.S. Department of Energy where she was part of a team that worked with future scientific leaders to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion at the National Laboratories. Lisa received numerous awards recognizing and honoring her for enhancing and inspiring the success of women in STEM careers.
